Description
Vitamin B7, better known as biotin, belongs to the B group of vitamins and helps maintain healthy skin, hair, and nervous system function. Biotin is essential for normal fat metabolism, which plays an important role in heart and blood vessel health. It increases insulin production, lowers blood sugar levels and enhances its uptake by muscle cells, and stimulates the production of the enzyme glucokinase in the liver, which promotes glycogen synthesis.
Biotin is involved in the formation of myelin sheaths, a fatty substance that surrounds nerves and promotes impulse conduction. Its deficiency can lead to a range of neurological symptoms, including seizures, lack of muscle coordination, visual disturbances, hallucinations, depression and lethargy, impair immune function, and is associated with an increased risk of infection.
