These BCAAs play an important role during exercise and in the maintenance and growth of skeletal muscle. During exercise, BCAAs are used as an energy source and also play an important role in gluconeogenesis, the mechanism by which glucose is reused for energy in the muscles.

As the body requires more energy during exercise, BCAA oxidation increases, therefore adding more BCAAs will prevent muscle tissue from being broken down for BCAAs. BCAAs are rich in energy in the sense that when they are oxidized, more adenosine triphosphate or ATP is produced. ATP is used by cells as an energy carrier. It is often referred to as "molecular currency" and is responsible for transporting energy in cells for metabolism.
